The Wildlife and Botany Program of our Forestry Division has an opening for a qualified Biologist to help manage Sierra Pacific Industries' forestlands in northern California. The position will deal primarily with wildlife issues, but familiarity with botany is desirable. The position is based out of our Chico office, and the primary geographical focus will be Tehama, Butte and Plumas counties. Primary Duties Include: Participate in policy-level discussions regarding wildlife issues in actively-managed California forests within the Company and with outside entities. Perform field surveys for both animals and plants. Recommend short and long term management strategies for these species. Query and analyze data and write reports dealing with biological issues in environmental documents. Publish results of scientific studies. Effectively work with State and Federal regulators. Train other members of the forestry division on biological issues. Speak to groups and organizations about wildlife and botany programs. Field work that includes hiking in rough terrain, conducting surveys at all hours (day or night) and working in remote locations in all types of weather conditions. Qualifications Include: A Bachelor degree in wildlife biology, forestry, botany, or related natural resource field. Three or more years of experience associated with the primary duties listed above. Familiarity with California spotted owls, goshawks, and other wildlife species in the focus counties. Ability to identify the fish and wildlife species in the focus geographic area. Understanding of federal and state rules and laws dealing with timber and wildlife. Map and photo interpretation experience. Proficient in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint.) Personable with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Valid Driver License and ability to travel occasionally to remote forest sites throughout northern California.
