Position Description As a Technical Writer at Medtronic Navigation, you will develop and maintain a variety of Instructions For Use (IFU) documents, including Pocket Guides, System Manuals, Quick Reference Guides, Package Inserts, Technical Bulletins, software help files, and other technical materials describing our line of advanced surgical guidance products. You will take the initiative to identify document requirements, interview product developers and marketing managers to obtain the necessary information, and distill this information into detailed, accurate, professional documentation. You will author certain document types in XML using custom DTDs and manage the XML content in a Content Management System. You will use a configuration management tool to package IFU with the products they describe and fulfill other documentation requirements per the Quality System and medical device regulations. You may be asked to coordinate the translation and release of IFU into other languages. You will be asked to present complex concepts clearly and concisely, manage multiple projects concurrently, adjust priorities frequently, work collaboratively with others, identify and implement process improvements, and apply creativity to overcome obstacles and meet deadlines. Position Responsibilities Identify IFU requirements and obtain necessary raw information from various sources Learn and understand the design and behavior of the companys products Design, develop, and maintain IFU using Adobe FrameMaker, the Vasont Content Management system, and other software applications Control IFU versioning and maintain IFU archives Provide IFU-related support to the Marketing, Product Development, Education, and Regulatory groups Identify IFU translation requirements, prepare and manage translation projects to completion Perform the administrative documentation tasks required to establish and track IFU in a configuration management system Perform IFU usability tests and validate the implementation of IFU requirements Continuously evaluate business processes, identify improvement opportunities, and implement improvements Proofread and edit the work of other writers Maintain and improve the TechComm style guide Track project status, hours, and activity in a project management tool Perform other duties as requested Basic Qualifications EDUCATION B.S./B.A. in a technical discipline (such as Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or Math) or a writing discipline (such as English or Journalism) EXPERIENCE 2+ years of technical writing or technical editing experience in a technical publications group 1+ years authoring XML-based IFU SKILLS Superior written communication Proficiency with Adobe FrameMaker software, including the structured interface Proficiency in XML authoring Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat, Adobe PhotoShop, and Adobe Illustrator CHARACTERISTICS Self-starter Priority-driven Delivers on commitments Cooperates with others Solution-oriented Sequential thinker Strong planner Technically oriented Articulate Organized Assertive Creative Inquisitive Quick study Desired/Preferred Qualifications Experience using an XML-based Content Management System Experience using and/or administering the Vasont Content Management System Experience working in a regulated industry Experience working in the medical device industry Knowledge of software and hardware development methodology Knowledge of document translation methodology
